I must confess, I love to talk…. sometimes I can hardly get my words out, I am so excited to share my ideas 😂
But one of the most important things I have learned over the years is that it is really, vitally important to listen.
Not with half an ear, or while doing other things, but to listen fully, totally and with my full concentration. 👂👂
Sometimes, we can spend the time while someone is talking planning what we are going to say next, or working out how we are going to show them that they are mistaken, or wondering how to distract them and move them on to another topic…. and then we have no idea what the other person was saying, and often they know it.
This is a terrible way to treat people, and sadly most of us know how it feels to not be heard 😕
We all want to be heard, and we all want to be understood.
As leaders, we need to know and understand what is happening in our organisations, in our teams and how our customers are feeling.
Yes it can feel painful sometimes to hear that something is wrong, or that people are not happy, or that somebody else is doing it better.
But even worse than that would be to **NOT** hear that something is wrong, or that people are not happy, or that somebody else is doing it better.
And a leader who doesn’t listen, will eventually find that they are surrounded by people with nothing to say.
If you listen, you will learn.
So next time someone wants a quick word – give them your full attention.
People love to be heard, they love to be understood, and you will have a better insight into how your team are doing.
